Case Study on Aging Test of Polyester Powder Coatings for Construction
DSM Resin is a Dutch manufacturer of polyester powder coatings for construction. Their customers are mainly the construction industry. Therefore, DSM resins are concerned about the changes in performance of their products in long-term natural light environments.
In the 60 years that DSM has produced powder coatings, they have carried out a large number of weathering tests and accumulated more than 30 years of data. Like many paint and coating manufacturers, the main types of degradation that they are concerned about are color changes and loss of gloss. DSM evaluates and tests color and gloss changes over a period of about 10 years. Considers weathering testing a key component of its product development strategy. The large amount of data collected allows them to provide a 10-year life expectancy. Problem Description
The main problem that DSM encountered was that they purchased three UV accelerated aging test boxes from a brand of equipment manufacturer for the ASTM G154 test (the test time exceeded 500 hours). A gloss loss> 50% indicates a critical failure mode. This test method is an internationally recognized standard for building and steel coating testing. DSM needs to ensure the stability and consistency of products from the results of accelerated aging tests, thereby improving its market reputation. However, three UV aging test chambers are installed in the same laboratory and are only a few meters away. Often, stable, consistent and comparable test results cannot be provided. The maintenance staff of the equipment manufacturer spent a lot of time in three years trying to make the equipment provide stable and consistent results, but failed.
