What is the CASS
CASS is a newly developed rapid salt spray corrosion test. It makes use of the characteristics of large electrode potential difference between copper salt and steel parts and nickel coating to accelerate the corrosion of the coating. It was originally used to test nickel, copper, or chromium decorative coatings plated onto metal surfaces.
Why we conduct CASS test
Simulated salt spray tests include:
(1) Neutral salt spray test (NSS test) is the earliest emergence of the current application of the most widely used to accelerate corrosion test method. It uses 5% of sodium chloride brine solution, solution pH adjusted in the neutral range (6 ~ 7) as a spray with the solution. Test temperature are taken 35 ℃, the required settlement rate of salt spray in 1 ~ 2ml / 80cm2.h between.
(2) Acetate salt test (ASS test) is developed on the basis of neutral salt fog test. It is in 5% sodium chloride solution with some glacial acetic acid, so that the solution PH value down to about 3, the solution becomes acidic, the final formation of salt spray also from neutral salt spray into acidic. Its corrosion rate is about 3 times faster than the NSS test.
(3) Copper accelerated salt spray test (CASS test) is a newly developed foreign rapid salt spray corrosion test, test temperature of 50 ℃, the salt solution with a small amount of copper salt—copper chloride, strongly induced corrosion.
The Copper Accelerated Salt Spray test is compared with the neutral salt spray test because the test temperature is increased from 35℃ to 50℃. Coupled with the accelerated effect of copper salt on corrosion, the corrosion rate is increased by 7 to 8 times, and it is also 2 to 3 times faster than the acetate spray test. The test time is obviously shortened, saving a lot of manpower, financial and material resources.
How to conduct CASS test
Test Requirements:
1. Salt solution: A 5% sodium chloride solution is prepared.
2. Copper sulfate solution: A 0.26% copper sulfate solution is prepared and added to the salt solution.
3. Test specimen: A clean and dry specimen of the material under test is selected.
4. Testing chamber: A suitable testing chamber is required to maintain the required temperature, humidity, and exposure conditions for the test.
5. Recording instruments: A measuring instrument to monitor temperature, humidity, and spray rate is necessary.
Test Procedure:
1. The testing chamber is set up and calibrated with the required temperature and humidity.
2. The salt solution is prepared as per the requirement and copper sulfate solution is added to it.
3. The test specimen is weighed and marked for identification.
4. The specimen is placed in the testing chamber at a 15-degree angle.
5. The salt spray solution is sprayed on the test specimen at a rate of 1-2 ml per hour.
6. The temperature of the testing chamber is maintained at 50 °C +/- 2 °C and the humidity is maintained at 95% +/- 5%.
7. The test specimens are continually observed for their performance and a record is maintained.
8. The test is continued for a specified time, typically 24–48 hours, based on the test standard being followed.
9. The test is completed, and the specimens are removed, dried, and examined for evidence of corrosion.
10. The specimens’ corrosion level is then assessed and compared to the acceptance criteria as per the test standard.
