What are the Applications of the Cryogenic Chamber

Jul 07, 2021

In modern engineering and industrial applications, materials and components are often exposed to extreme conditions that challenge their durability, mechanical performance, and reliability. From aerospace structures and high-speed machinery to precision tools and electronic devices, understanding how metals, alloys, and composites behave at ultra-low temperatures is critical for ensuring safety, longevity, and optimal performance. LIB's Cryogenic Chamber offers a controlled, repeatable, and safe environment for simulating these harsh conditions, enabling engineers and researchers to evaluate material properties, reveal failure modes, and optimize designs before deployment in demanding applications.

Cryogenic chamber application of cryogenic technology in nuclear industry and aerospace industry.  Among them, the use in aerospace industry is more prominent.  Spaceflight parts will greatly enhance their durability and fatigue resistance after super, treatment and hot and cold shock.  Thus, the reliability and life of the machine are improved.

Key components and features include:

  • Mechanical-Compressor Cooling: Eliminates the handling, refilling, and safety concerns associated with liquid nitrogen, while delivering stable and continuous ultra-low temperature control.
  • Cascade PID Control: PT100 Class A sensors monitor temperature with high accuracy, while the programmable PID controller maintains ±0.5 °C stability and ±1.5 °C uniformity across the workroom.
  • Wide Temperature Range & Thermal Cycling: The system covers −120 °C to +150 °C, enabling extreme thermal-delta cycles for materials, devices, or sensors within a single chamber.
  • Predictable Performance: Typical cool-down from ambient to −120 °C occurs within 90–180 minutes, depending on sample load, with programmable cooling/heating profiles for repeatable testing.
  • Safety Features: Built-in over-temperature protection, auto-defrost cycles, high-pressure interlocks, fail-safe power cut-offs, and remote alarms ensure safe and reliable operation.

By combining precise mechanical refrigeration, advanced control systems, and rigorous safety features, LIB Cryogenic Chambers provide a controlled environment for ultra-low temperature testing, ensuring reproducible and auditable results for demanding applications.

Procedure for Testing Metal Materials in a Cryogenic Chamber

Step 1: Sample Preparation

Cut or shape metal specimens according to relevant standards (e.g., ASTM E23, ISO 148, GB/T 229).

Measure and record initial dimensions, mass, and surface condition.

Mount samples securely in chamber racks or holders.

Step 2: Chamber Setup

Set the Cryogenic Chamber to the target temperature based on testing requirements:

−60 °C to −80 °C: General low-temperature simulation (cold climate, storage).

−100 °C to −120 °C: Aerospace, aviation, or deep-sea equipment testing.

−196 °C: Ultra-low temperature or superconducting material testing.

Verify sensors, PID controller, data logging, and safety interlocks are functioning properly.

Step 3: Controlled Cooling

Start the cascade mechanical refrigeration system.

Cool samples gradually to the target temperature:

Ambient → −40 °C: ~1 °C/min.

Ambient → −120 °C: typically 90–180 minutes depending on sample load.

Allow samples to stabilize for a sufficient soak period for uniform thermal exposure.

Step 4: Mechanical Testing

Conduct the required tests at the target temperature:

Tensile Test: Measure stress-strain behavior and ductility.

Impact Test: Determine toughness and brittle-ductile transition.

Hardness Test: Optional for low-temperature hardness evaluation.

Record any failures, cracks, or anomalies.

Step 5: Data Collection & Logging

Capture temperature, uniformity, and stability data using chamber sensors and PID control.

Export test data via Ethernet/USB in CSV or PDF format for documentation and traceability.

Step 6: Post-Test Handling

Gradually return samples to ambient temperature to prevent thermal shock.

Inspect and document any surface or structural changes.

Analyze results for compliance with material specifications and application requirements.
