What's A Rain Test And Rain Test Chamber

Jun 19, 2023

We are in contact with and use electronic products at any time in daily life, so their waterproof performance is very important. The rain test chamber is testing equipment used to test the waterproof performance of the product, and it is an indispensable part of today's environmental reliability test.

What is the rain test

Generally, the rain test refers to a testing process to determine the durability of a product or material against water or rain exposure. It may be conducted by exposing the product or material to artificial or natural rain conditions for a specified time and observing its performance and functionality. The purpose of the rain test is to evaluate the water-resistant capability of products such as outdoor equipment, electronic devices, architectural features, and building materials. It helps to ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of products under different weather conditions.

Classification of rain tests

There are several types of rain tests used to measure the effectiveness of waterproofing products. Here are some of the most common types:

rain test chamber

1. Water Spray Test: It involves spraying water on the sample material to measure its resistance against water penetration.
rain test chamber 2 2. Water Column Test: This test determines the pressure of water that a fabric or material can withstand before it starts to leak.
rain test chamber 3 3. Shower Test: Similar to the water spray test, but the water is sprayed in a specific pattern and volume to simulate a shower.
rain test chamber 4 4. Immersion Test: The material is immersed in water for a specific period and then examined for water penetration.
rain test chamber 5 5. Water Jetting Test: It simulates the impact of raindrops on a surface to see how well it repels water.

The test standard performed by the rain test

The following are some widely accepted international test standards for rain testing:

1. ISO 20653:2013 – Road vehicles—Degrees of protection (IP code)—Protection of electrical equipment against foreign objects, water, and access

2. DIN EN 60529:2013-02 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code)

3. MIL-STD-810G – Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests

4. ASTM E1105 – Standard Test Method for Field Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference

5. EN 60068-2-52:2018 – Environmental testing – Part 2-52: Tests – Test Kb: Salt mist, cyclic (sodium chloride solution)

6. ANSI/UL 62368-1:2018 – Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment – Part 1: Safety requirements

7. JIS D 0203:2015 – Road vehicles – Degrees of protection (IP code)

8. IEC 60598-2-1—Luminaires – Part 2-1: Particular requirements – Fixed general purpose luminaires

The most commonly used criteria are EN 60529 and JIS D 0203.
