What is an IP Rating?

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings measure how resistant a device is against solids and water. IP ratings are determined by the international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) and European IEC 60509.

The IEC60529 standard was developed by the IEC, the first version was published in 1976, and then revised in 1978 and corrected in 1984. IP rating standards have been developed and improved over time to provide a consistent and globally recognized system for measuring the level of protection provided by a product against solid and liquid ingress.

This standard has undergone numerous revisions and updates to ensure that the ratings are relevant and accurate for modern technology and applications. The improvements in technology have also led to the development of new categories within the IP rating system, such as IPX8 which measures protection against continuous immersion in water. Overall, the IP rating system has become an essential tool for manufacturers, designers, and buyers, as it ensures products are fit for purpose and provide the expected level of protection.

The specific meaning of the IP code

IP code is the international certification system for waterproof level. It is the most common technical indicator used to mark the waterproof level of the product on outdoor, diving, and many other instruments and equipment. Headlamps, GPS, watches, and other electronic devices are often marked with IP code.

The two digits behind IP indicate the protective strength of the equipment shell against solid foreign objects and water intrusion. The first digit indicates the level of electrical equipment against dust and foreign objects, and the second digit indicates the degree of confinement of the equipment against moisture and water intrusion. The larger the digit, the higher the protection level.

Sometimes, the level of protection is unknown or hasn’t been tested. In these cases, an ‘X’ replaces the numeral. IP waterproof rating is divided into a total of 8 levels, respectively from IPX1 to IPX8, the waterproof ability is enhanced in turn. IPX0 indicates that it is not waterproof at all. IPX7 Waterproof means the device has level 7 water sealing, while its protection against dust is unknown.

Water projected in jets against the enclosure from any directions shall have no harmful effects

IPX6

Protected against powerful water jets

Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects

IPX7

Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water

Ingress of water in quantities causing harmful effects shall not be possible when the enclosure is temporarily immersed in water under standardized conditions of pressure and time

IPX8

Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water

Ingress of water in quantities causing harmful effects shall not be possible when the enclosure is continuously immersed in water under conditions which shall be agreed between manufacturer and user but which are more severe than for numeral 7

IP67 and IP67 test equipment

The 6 indicates “complete protection against dust over extended time” as well as “protection against contact with objects greater than 1 mm in diameter, such as a wire or a small tool.”

The 7 indicates the system is “protected against short periods of immersion in water while under pressure between 15 cm and 1 m.”

IP67 products offer a greater degree of protection than those with IP65 or IP66 ratings, both of which are merely “water-resistant.”

“Water-resistant” means that the system protects against water entrance to a degree, but it does not offer complete protection.

Common IP67 rating products

IP67 rating means that the product is waterproof and dustproof. Here are some of the most common products with IP67 rating in daily life:

1. Smartphones: Many high-end smartphones these days come with IP67 rating, making them water-resistant and dust-proof.

2. Fitness trackers: Popular fitness trackers like Fitbit have an IP67 rating, making them suitable for wear during intense activities like swimming and mud runs.

3. Speakers: Waterproof and dustproof speakers are perfect for outdoor activities like camping, hiking and pool parties.

4. Power banks: IP67 rated power banks can withstand extreme weather conditions while charging your devices.

5. Action cameras: Action cameras like the GoPro are designed to be used in rugged environments, and an IP67 rating ensures they can withstand water and dirt.

6. Flashlights: IP67 rated flashlights are durable and suitable for outdoor activities.

7. Electric shavers: Advertisements for electric shavers show people shaving in the shower, and that's because many of them have an IP67 rating.
