SO₂ is a toxic gas. For this installation of the SO₂ Mixed Gas Test chamber at UL in Germany, safety came first:
✅ The gas room is kept ventilated at all times
✅ Gas lines and connections are checked one by one
✅ Exhaust gas is treated according to local regulations

But safety is only half of the job. Accurate test results matter just as much. Following IEC 60068-2-60, we confirmed three more details with the engineers:
🔹 Use a clean gas source. Impurities can form deposits on the chamber walls that look like corrosion, but are not
🔹 Install a filter at the gas source, and inspect or replace it regularly
🔹 Stabilize temperature and humidity first, then introduce the gases, to avoid concentration overshoot
Clean gas, a correct procedure and regular maintenance keep the chamber stable over the long term and the test data reliable.
Mixed gas testing helps evaluate the corrosion resistance of connectors, electronic components, PCBs and coatings.
【LIB Completes On-Site Installation of an SO₂ Mixed Gas Test chamber at UL, Germany】
LIB Industry has completed the on-site installation of an SO₂ Mixed Gas Test chamber for UL in Germany. Because SO₂ is a toxic and
corrosive gas, the installation was planned around three priorities: personnel safety, gas-line integrity and the stability of the test environment. Our engineers worked alongside UL's technical team throughout, from site preparation to final handover.
Step 1: Site and Gas Room Preparation
① Continuous ventilation: the gas room is ventilated at all times, so that any trace leakage is diluted and removed rather than allowed to accumulate.
② Layout check: the chamber, gas cylinder area, piping routes and exhaust outlet were reviewed on site before installation began, keeping the gas path short, accessible and easy to inspect.
③ Safety provisions: gas leak alarms and clear access to the cylinder area were confirmed as part of the toxic-gas safety setup.
Step 2: Chamber Positioning and Gas Line Connection
① Test Chamber placement: the chamber was positioned and leveled, with utilities (power, water and drainage) connected according to the site conditions.
② Gas supply connection: the SO₂ line was connected to the chamber's gas mixing and control system.
③ Filter at the gas source: a filter was installed on the gas source side to hold back particles before the gas enters the chamber, protecting the piping, valves and sensors. It should be inspected and replaced regularly, since a blocked filter also affects gas flow.
Step 3: Gas Line Checks, One by One
Every gas line and connection was inspected individually before any gas was introduced. This one-by-one check confirms that fittings are tight and that no leakage path exists between the cylinder, the mixing system and the chamber. For a toxic gas such as SO₂, this step is completed before commissioning begins.
Step 4: Exhaust Gas Treatment
Exhaust gas from the SO₂ Mixed Gas Test chambers treated according to local regulations before release. The exhaust path was connected and checked together with the gas lines, so that no untreated gas is discharged during testing.
Step 5: Commissioning According to IEC 60068-2-60
Commissioning followed the sequence recommended by the standard and confirmed with UL's engineers:
① Temperature and humidity first: the chamber is brought to stable temperature and humidity conditions before any gas is introduced.
② Then gas introduction: SO₂ is introduced only after the environment is stable, which helps avoid concentration overshoot.
③ Concentration verification: gas concentration and stability were checked to confirm the system performs as required for mixed gas testing.
Step 6: Operator Training and Handover
① After commissioning, LIB engineers trained UL's team on operation and routine care:
② Safe start-up and shutdown procedures for a toxic-gas system
③ Gas cylinder changeover and line checks
④ Filter inspection and replacement
⑤ Daily and periodic maintenance to keep the chamber stable over the long term
【Why the Installation Details Matter】
In mixed gas corrosion testing, small installation and procedure details affect the data. Impurities in the gas can deposit on the chamber walls and look like corrosion, while an incorrect start-up sequence can cause concentration overshoot. A ventilated gas room, checked connections, a filter at the source and a correct commissioning order together give the chamber a stable base for repeatable results. These tests evaluate the corrosion resistance of connectors, electronic components, PCBs and coatings.
