Smoky color fastness test principle

Jan 18, 2024

The gas fume test chamber is to observe the degree of color change after a certain period of time by exposing the tested fabric to nitrogen oxides produced by gas combustion. The smoke color fastness test is a test method for determining the color fastness of all textiles, except loose fibers, when exposed to atmospheric nitrogen oxides produced by the combustion of chemically pure butane gas or city gas.

Scope of application

All textiles except loose fibers.

gas fume 1

gas fume 2

gas fume 3

Test principle

The test is performed by exposing a sample of the textile material to the smoke generated by a standardized smoked generator. The smoke from the generator is passed through a glass chimney and allowed to settle onto the textile sample. After a specific time, the sample is evaluated for any color changes or discoloration. The degree of color change is compared to a standard scale to determine the smoke color fastness rating.

The rating scale is as follows:

1. Excellent: No visible change in color or appearance
2. Good: Slight discoloration but not noticeable to the naked eye
3. Fair: Noticeable discoloration but not severe
4. Poor: Severe discoloration and changes in appearance

Test method

Smoke color fastness tester Operation steps:
(1) Hang the test sample and the control in the test box, and there is no direct contact between the test sample and the test sample and the control cloth. At the same time, they should not be in contact with any hot metal surface. Under normal circumstances, the test cloth is uniformly hung in the box in 3 pieces;
(2) Ignite the gas and adjust the instrument so that the temperature in the test chamber does not exceed 60℃.
(3) Observe the change of the control cloth. Until the color difference between the control cloth and the standard faded cloth is obvious in daylight, the test sample is removed, and the color difference is immediately compared with the Grey Scale.
(4) The sample may continue to change color after removal. If additional evaluation is required, the test sample and control sample and several pieces of the original test and control cloth should be immediately immersed in urea solution (buffer) for 5 minutes. It is then wrung out and thoroughly rinsed, and dried in the air at a temperature of no more than 60 °C.
(5) After the end of the first cycle, those samples that are not discolored and have not been treated with buffer can continue to be put back into the test box, while hanging the untested control cloth to continue testing. The test sample is taken out for evaluation until the control cloth put in for the second time has a significant color difference from the standard faded cloth.
(6) The test cycle may need to be repeated many times until the test sample reaches the specified color difference.
