What Is The Thermal Test And Thermal Test Chamber

Jul 04, 2023

A thermal test chamber is a specialized testing facility used to evaluate the thermal performance of various products and materials. It is designed to simulate a range of environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, humidity levels, and air pressures. These chambers utilize advanced temperature control mechanisms and insulation material to create a controlled environment that mimics different thermal conditions. Thermal testing is critical to ensure that products are safe, reliable, and satisfy the requirements of various industry standards. As such, the thermal test chamber is an indispensable tool for researchers, product developers, and manufacturers in various sectors, including electronics, aerospace, automotive, and medical devices.

What is the thermal test?

Thermal test, also known as high and low temperature cycle test, is one of the environmental reliability tests of products. Basically, all products are stored in a certain temperature environment, or work. In some environments, the temperature is constantly changing, sometimes high and sometimes low. Such as day and night in areas with large temperature differences. Or the product in the transportation, storage, operation process repeatedly in and out of the high temperature area, low temperature area. This high and low temperature environment may reach above 70 °C or higher at high temperatures, and below -20 °C or lower at low temperatures.

This changing temperature environment will cause the function, performance, quality, and life of the product to be affected, will accelerate the aging of the product, shorten the service life of the product. If the product is in this high temperature and low temperature environment for a long time, it needs to have sufficient resistance to high and low temperature cycle. In this way, we need to simulate certain environmental conditions and carry out high and low temperature testing on the product to understand the performance of the product in this respect. If the test result fails to meet the standard set by us, we will improve the product according to the test situation and then re-test until qualified.

How to perform the thermal test?

High and low temperature tests are performed using programmable thermal test chambers with heating and cooling functions.

Before the test, check the status of the test sample, whether the appearance, function, and performance are normal, and take photos; Then, put the sample into the high and low temperature chamber, set the high temperature and low temperature values of the temperature chamber and their respective holding time, temperature changing time and cycle number. For example, the high temperature at 70 °C for 2 hours, and then from 70 °C for half an hour to -20 °C for 2 hours, and then from -20 °C for half an hour to 70 °C. Test 20 loops like this. After testing, take out the sample, check the appearance, function, performance of the sample after testing. If it is found that the sample has no significant change compared with the test before, or the change is in the specified standard range. It means that the anti-high and low temperature cycle performance of the test sample meets the requirements, otherwise it is not in compliance.

It is worth noting that if the test you want to perform require the test pieces to undergo rapid changes in high and low temperatures in a very short period of time, you better choose a fast change rate thermal cycle chamber or thermal shock test chamber. These are better than ordinary temperature test chambers to achieve rapid temperature switching.

The high and low temperature test of electronic and electrical products is divided into high and low temperature storage test and high and low temperature operation test. High and low temperature storage means that the product is not powered on and tested in a non-working state. High and low temperature operation is to supply power to the product and test it in the working state of the product.

Adding humidity to the heat test can also lead to new tests: high temperature and humidity test, constant temperature and humidity test, alternating humidity and heat test.
