Why We Need IPX1-4 Water Spray Chamber

An electric toothbrush falls into the sink; forget to take off your watch in the shower; when I was driving in a heavy rain, the car stalled… Many things in life, especially electronic products can not directly contact water, need to do waterproof treatment. The water spray chamber is used to do waterproof testing for these products, to avoid you falling into the above embarrassing situation.

The waterproofing of the product is also classified, and the waterproofing level is tested and certified according to the standard IEC 60529.

 

The water spray chamber is the necessary equipment for the rain test. The rain test is an artificial environmental test method, which simulates the working efficiency of the tested equipment during or after the rain. The rain test is suitable for the protection of aviation vehicles, home appliances, external lighting and signal devices and automobile lamps. The main consideration is the waterproof sealing and whether the rain can penetrate into the inside of the equipment, causing work disorders and even damage.

1: Water drops into the shell has no effect

 

2: When the shell is tilted to 15 degrees, the water drop into the shell has no effect

 

3: Water or rain from 60 degrees corner to the shell has no effect

 

4: Liquid poured from any direction to the shell without harm

 

5: Rinse with water without any harm

 

6: Can be used in the cabin environment

 

7: Can be soaked in a short time (1 m)

 

8: Soak in water for a long time under certain pressure

 

IPX1X2 water spray test and IPX1X2 water spray chamber


 

  • The IPX1 test is a drip test, which is done by placing the device under test on a turntable under the drip tray. The drip tray must be able to provide a flow of one millimeter per minute. The test lasted 10 minutes. During the test, the electronics are located on a turntable and rotate at a rate of one revolution per minute.

  • The purpose of the IPX1 test is to determine whether the enclosure of the device can withstand the intrusion of water that drops vertically onto its surface. IPX1 test is the basic level of waterproof test. It is primarily designed for use in devices that are unlikely to come into contact with water or other liquids in their intended use. Items with an IPX1 rating should not be considered completely waterproof. Therefore, we do not recommend that you keep these devices in places where they need to come into contact with water.

  • The IPX2 is also a drip test, but it is tilted at 15° drip; It is necessary to make one face of the sample at a 15° Angle to the vertical line, and the distance from the top of the sample to the drip mouth is not more than 200 mm. After each side, change to the other side, a total of four times, each time 2.5 minutes.

IPX3 test is the swing type rain test.

Specimens placed: Choose the proper diameter of swing tube, make the height of the rotation table within diameter of swing tube,keep the distance between the top of the sample and drop nozzle no more than 200 mm, sample table do not rotate.

Test condition:Water spray volume calculated by tube spray hole, each hole 0.07L/min. Do the spray test, each spray hole form 60°angle spray the water to test specimens. Test specimens are placed at the center of swing tube, the tube swing on both sides of the vertical for 60°,total 120°. Each swing (2*120°) need 4s. Test pressure:400Kpa Test time: Continuous spraying 10 min, test specimens rotate 90°after 5 min test.

IPX4 test is the splash test

Test equipment and specimens placed:Choose the proper diameter of swing tube, make the height of the rotation table within diameter of swing tube,keep the distance between the top of the sample and drop nozzle no more than 200 mm, sample table do not rotate. Test condition:Water spray volume calculated by tube spray hole, each hole 0.07L/min. Do the spray test, each spray hole from 90°angle spray the water to test specimens. Test specimens are placed at the center of swing tube, the tube swing on both sides of the vertical for 180°,total 360°. Each swing (2*360°) need 12s. Test time: 10 min.

 

IPX3 and IPX4 grades use the same set of test equipment, where IPX4 is more common in consumer products, meaning that it provides protection against water spills and can be used for intense exercise or inclement weather conditions. Most sports headphones are generally located in this level, such as Apple AirPods Pro protection level is IPX4.
