IP grade water spray chamber is common test equipment used to test the waterproof performance of electronic products, auto parts, communication equipment, etc. under different levels of water pressure. It plays an important role in ensuring the waterproof performance of electronic products and auto parts.
What Is The Water Spray Chamber
The water spray chamber is one of the branches of the IP rain test chamber.
Ingress Protection (IP) ratings measure how resistant a device is against solids and water. IP ratings are determined by the international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) and European IEC 60509: 1989 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code).
There are two major classifications of IP testing, rain testing and dust testing, and thus there are two types of test chambers, sand and dust test chambers and rain test chambers. And in the rain test chamber, according to the different test methods are divided into water spray type, water jet type, water immersion type.
IP waterproof ratings has a clear division of the waterproof grade of the tested product, from 1 to 8, there are a total of 8 grades, in addition, according to the different pressure, additional 6K and 9K two grades.
Water spray types include IPX1-4 and 1PX9K.

IPX1 & IPX2
IPX1 Test:
Defined as dripping water with vertically falling drops.
The requirement is that the equipment under test (EUT), shall experience no harmful effects from the dripping water.
The test details include a test duration of 10 minutes and a water equivalent to 1 mm of rainfall per minute.
IPX2 Test:
Defined as dripping water when tilted up to 15°.
The requirement is that the EUT shall experience no harmful effects when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position and exposed to dripping water.
The test details include a test duration of 10 minutes and a water equivalent to 3 mm rainfall per minute.
IPX3 and IPX4 are test standards for protection levels, used to test the waterproof performance of equipment. These tests are usually performed by third party laboratories, and here are the general steps to perform the tests:
IPX3 & IPX4
IPX3 test:
1. The test sample is placed in a fixed position of the rotary pipe.
2. Spray test the sample for 5 minutes using a 35L/min water flow and an average water pressure of 100kPa.
3. Within 1 minute after the test, the sample shall not show any penetration phenomenon.
4. During the rest of the time, the test sample shall not show any penetration phenomenon that affects the function.
5. After the test, check whether the device works properly.
IPX4 test:
1. The test sample is placed in a fixed position of the rotary pipe.
2. Spray test the sample for 5 minutes with a flow of 10L/min and an average water pressure of 100kPa.
3. Within 1 minute after the test, the sample shall not show any penetration phenomenon.
4. During the rest of the time, the test sample shall not show any penetration phenomenon that affects the function.
5. After the test, check whether the device works properly.
IPX9K
IPX9K waterproof test mainly includes the following aspects of the test items:
Test requirement
1. Diameter of nozzle: about 12.5 mm, distance from the nearest test object is 100-150 mm.
2. Nozzle distance: about 100-150 mm, test duration is 30 seconds.
3. Nozzle water flow: the flow rate is at least 14-16L/min, and the spray water pressure can reach 80-100 bar.
4. Tester pressure: 100-150 bar.
5. Test time: 30 seconds to 3 minutes.
Testing Process
1. Confirm the test environment, including test equipment, IPX9K test nozzle, etc.
2. According to IPX9K standard requirements, set the test parameters, including spray distance, temperature, time, etc.
3. Pre-test the test equipment to ensure that it is in good condition.
4. Put the device under test into the test device to ensure that it can fully receive the water jet from the test nozzle.
5. Start the test of continuous high pressure water jet test with 30 seconds in each position(0°,30°,60°,90°), and the total time for the four positions is 120 seconds.
7. After the test, check whether the running status and appearance of the test piece meet the requirements.
These steps may vary slightly for different standards and devices.
Product recommendation
LIB has a line of water spray chambers to test the IPX1, X2, IPX3 and IPX4 and IPX9K protection degree against rain and sprays according to IEC 60529 and other international standards. The water spray chamber built with water re-circulation system that reduced water use and a series of water pipes. An incorporated rotating turntable can promote even spray of water over the surface of the products under testing. Automatic water supply ensures adequate supply of water and automatic testing. All models are upgrade to programmable controller and Ethernet access that provides simple operation and control. Its waterproof power connector in the test room can easily supply electricity to the specimens.
